UK Rail: Increasing Capacity Now
Background
Published in November 2007. Invensys Rail commissioned independent consultants, Credo Group, who examined and analysed over 30 published sources to compare costs and capacity increases provided by a range of real world transport infrastructure projects. This information was supplemented by interviews with experts in government, trade associations and various industries. The findings were verified by independent auditors.
Key Findings
- Rail investment provides significantly better capacity economics than raod investment
- Train lengthening and signalling upgrades, particularly next generation in-cab solutions such as ERTMS, are more cost effective than widening and new build
- Reinstatement is a more cost effective solution to meet capacity needs than new build.
